 | | Voice of the People: Pete Lagiovane Chambersburg’s Mayor Strives to Help His Borough Thrive and Grow.

I moved to Chambersburg 35 years ago. I was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., but my wife, Kay, is a native of Marion, Pa., and a graduate of Chambersburg Area Senior High School. Like many of what I call the “comebackers,” we realized after our daughter was born that it made a lot of sense to return to Kay’s hometown. Chambersburg’s friendly people, good schools, quiet neighborhoods and safe streets, in addition to its affordable housing, made it the ideal place to raise a family.
Through serving on several local governmental committees and the boards of service and charitable organizations, I realized that it must have taken the hard work of many exceptional people to create a great community like Chambersburg — and requires the volunteer efforts of hundreds to preserve it. Therefore, when I was approached about running for mayor, I felt obligated to give it a try. I can honestly say that since being elected I’ve enjoyed every moment as mayor.
Chambersburg’s “weak mayor” form of government — in which the borough council hires a borough manager to run daily operations — means the mayor’s primary role is ceremonial. But as the only borough official elected by all the borough’s residents, I believe the mayor should serve as an ombudsman for residents. Shortly after being elected I expanded the borough website to include an “Ask the Mayor” blog, where the mayor and borough residents can discuss concerns, air grievances and establish an ongoing dialogue.
One of my other interests has been to improve our downtown and help it thrive. Last year I introduced an amendment to allow the consumption of alcoholic beverages at restaurants’ outdoor dining areas and in public places during festivals and charitable events. The ordinance was passed, and I believe it will increase downtown foot traffic, help existing businesses to grow and encourage the opening of more downtown restaurants and retail stores.
I encourage folks in Hagerstown to come up and visit us. Enjoy a picnic at the new Chambers Fort Park at the confluence of the Falling Spring and Conococheague Creek. The beautifully restored Capitol Theatre offers many performances each year and is the home of the Chambersburg Community Theatre company. If you are a beer connoisseur, check out the new Roy Pitts Brewing Company on 3rd Street. Join us Labor Day for a large parade downtown marking the 225th anniversary of Franklin County. And celebrate our common heritage May 2 with the rededication and reopening of the house where John Brown planned his historic raid.
Pete Lagiovane, Mayor of Chambersburg
